WORSHIP AND IDOLS

“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.”

Exodus 20: 2-6 ESV

Worship is what we are made for. It is a response to whom or what we love and adore most. It is that person, possesion, ambition, or desire that occupies our minds, hearts , and souls — that is what we worship. It would be worth a pause to take a step-back to ask: who or what are we really worshipping?

Being a created being, it is in our very nature to worship someone or something. What do you value the most? Where does your heart lie? That is what you are worshipping. And if your answer is not God, then He has the right to be jealous for we were created to worship, adore, and love Him with all our hearts, mind, and souls.

In Exodus 20:2-5, the Lord commanded Israel to not have other gods before Him for He is a jealous God. At the onset of this passage, we see an attribute of God having a righteous kind of jealousy, one that comes from His being the Creator of everything. His desire is for His creation to worship Him, and anything that takes His place becomes a “god” or an idol. While these things are not inherently bad within themselves, they must not and never take the place of God, for anything we put before God is an idol.

Worship is something one should offer to the God who made you and who actually deserves it. Worship is in us, with, and is us. Worshipping is our response for what He has done and who He is in our lives.

Challenge for today: Reflect on what you worship, whether your work, friends, leisure, relationships, career, money, ambition, etc.

Pray and ask God to reveal to you the idols of your heart and give you the strength to turn away from them. Seek Him above all. Let Him be the only One you worship and adore.
